A soft breeze ran through my hair as I stepped out of the car. Stretching my arms overhead, I let out a sigh of relief as I studied the path leading to the beach. I had just arrived for my vacation in the Outer Banks, one of North Carolina’s best beaches. After a stressful few weeks of work, I needed a holiday.
Beach Vacation in the Outer Banks
When it comes to beaches, the Outer Banks is as unique as they come. A 200-mile long string of barrier islands and spits off the coast of North Carolina, the area is perfect for a getaway from normal life.
There’s something for everyone in the Outer Banks, also known as OBX, even for a history buff like myself. On the second day of my trip, I visited the Wright Brothers National Monument near the seaside town of Kitty Hawk. If you’re interested in the history of aviation and American innovation then I recommend visiting this place. There’s nothing like taking in the sights and sounds of the place where human flight first happened.
When I wasn’t out and about I was relaxing at the hotel. I stayed at Koru Village Resort and Spa and absolutely loved it. With a spa, fitness center, and yoga, it’s the sort of place you never want to leave. Did I mention it’s also right on the beach? During the evening I took walks down the Avon Fishing Pier and gazed out at the horizon of the Atlantic before coming back to enjoy a drink while sitting by the pool.
As I said earlier, I’m a history buff, so I visited the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras, NC. I learned a lot about the treacherous waters just off the Outer Banks, where a large number of shipwrecks have occurred over years. I also read about the Outer Banks locals. Many made a living scavenging wrecked ships.
On my last day, I rented a board from a local surf shop and hit the waves. The sun was out. I had a ton of fun (even though I was remarkably terrible at the sport). Just being on the beaches in the Outer Banks was good enough for me.
When I arrived back home, I felt refreshed and ready to tackle another week of work. Of course, I’m already planning my next trip to the beach.
